Professional Work

Working in Waterford City Council from 2002 has allowed my the opportunity to work on a diverse range of projects. These projects are unique and provided many opportunities to develop project management skills and abilities in dealing with the public in numerous situations.

Below is an example of the experience I have gained.

Disability Grants

A Selection of Adaptations carried out to WCC houses.

Works include ramps, kitchens, bathrooms, small extension, to large scale house remodelling.

As part of my work I deal with processing private grant applications for three schemes; Housing Adaptation for a Person with a Disability, Housing Aid for the Older Person and Mobility Aids Grant. This involves inspecting the properties, accessing the works required and making a recommendation.

I also design, draw and project manage the works required to Waterford City Council housing stock to facilitate needs of tenants with disabilities. This ranges from small adaptations, large-scale extension and selecting suitable properties for purchase.

The annual budgets for these works vary but is generally in the range of €1 million.

Group Housing

Group Housing Scheme

Works included three sites with grouped housing, including access roads, boundaries and detached bungalows.

This scheme had three sites at different locations around Waterford City for the accommodation needs of the travelling community. I was involved at all stages from producing drawings, tendering to running site meetings and snagging.

The developments consisted of two sites with three detached bungalows and the third site with one bungalow. The bungalows ranged from three bedrooms to four bedrooms, with each bungalow site accommodating a caravan.

However, after several attempts the third site with the single bungalow was not completed due to several arson attacks, the other two sites were completed.

Remedial Works

Remedial Works Phase 3, Lisduggan, Waterford, 2007.

Works to external of 98 houses and 33 Council properties ranging from insulation, heating & rewiring.

I worked as a Clerk of Works for this Phase 3 of the Remedial Works to Lisduggan, Waterford. The phase contained 98 houses in total with 33 of them council properties.

The external works to all houses consisted of upgrading the appearance of the estate. All house received new gates, boundary walls, fascia & soffits, and were painted. New footpaths and paving were installed and works to address anti-social behaviour.

The internal works to council properties consisted of treatment for woodworm, insulation, central heating, rewiring, new windows & doors, new kitchens and bathrooms, new floors, painting and other items that arose.

Peoples Park

Phase 3 Redevelopment of the Peoples Park, Waterford.

Works included a drainage, new paths, skate park, woddler playground, and small outdoor stage area.

Having produced the drawings and worked closely with the City Architect, I was heavily involved with the project onsite. Working on this project required liaising with the contractor, site engineer, city architect, specialist contractors and suppliers. It also involved issuing instructions and information as required.

Drainage was a major issue to resolve as the land has a low table water level and suffered frequent flooding. Many new facilities were installed from a skate park, playground, outdoor stage, stretching area, distance marked perimeter path new signage.

Memorial

Gaol Wall Memorial, Ballybricken, Waterford.

Works included groundwork's to facilitate the installation of the memorial as design by the artist.

The Gaol Wall Memorial is to remember the  7 children and 3 adults who were killed when the nearby Goal Wall collapsed in March 1943.

I was involved with producing the drawings required to facilitate the artists design and sculpture, managing on site meetings and issues that arose through to completion.

Concept Infill

Concept Infill, St Johns Park, Waterford.

This project was developed to suit the needs of an elderly community with reduced mobility.

This small development was proposed for a community with an ageing population that are no longer mobile within the tradition two storey three bedroom house but are settled within their community.

The development was located within the existing community and the houses were compact two bedroom designs fully compliant with Part M of the building regulations.

Military Barracks

Large Housing Infill, Military Barracks, Waterford.

Works included construction of new housing units, along with conversion of existing buildings into housing units.

I produced the drawings required for Part 8 Planning Process, tendering and construction.

The development consisted of 34 new units within a historical Military Barracks with a large parade area located within a residential area of the city.

Playground

Playground at the Butler Community Centre, Waterford.

Works included drainage, access road, boundary fencing, ground works and installation of play equipment.

The playground was commissioned to address the needs of the surrounding neighbourhood.

I was involved with the designing, drawings, liaising with specialist suppliers and tendering. Once the project went on site I managed the site meetings, issues that arose on site, issuing of instructions and handover.

Urban Renewal

Urban Renewal Scheme to Waterford City Centre.

Works ranged from installation of new service ducting, repaving, new drainage, street lighting and furniture.

This stage of the Urban Renewal Scheme was based on Broad Street and Michael Street and was a continuation of the previous scheme completed in John Roberts Square.

I worked with the City Architect and consultant engineers to produce drawings required for tendering and construction.

St Anne's Terrace

Small Housing Infill, St Anne's Terrace, Waterford.

Works included construction of new housing units along with providing access and retaining streetscape.

I produced the drawings required for Part 8 Planning Process, tendering and construction.

The development consists of 5 units with 4 contained within a courtyard to the rear of the street property. The site is within a quite residential cul-de-sac.
