Academic Work

Studio work was a large part of the college work undertaken and over the year, we engaged in a various number of projects. These projects were set to challenge and prepare us for the professional environment.

Below is a sample of that work, starting with the most recent and working back.

Thesis

Public Procurement Process Potential for BIM

To investigate the Public procurement Process adaptation to include a BIM Methodology, using a case study in Local Government.

As part of the B.Sc.(Hons) in Architectural Technology the completion of a Thesis is required. I chose to cover a topic within Local Government, as procurement is an essential part of carrying out projects.

In addition, I wanted to cover the topic of BIM, which is an integral part of the course. In order to do this I combined both topics and investigate how BIM could be adopted into the procurement process.

Retrofit

Group Project

Infirmary Apartments

A holistic approach to retrofitting the apartment block. Increase the energy efficiency of the building and life quality of the residents.

This was a group project where we researched methods to upgrade the apartments building to improve the living conditions, energy rating and usages of the building.

On researching many options and payback periods, we presented our holistic approach in an outline PowerPoint presentation and in-depth booklet. The booklet is divided in two parts to the right.

Medieval Museum

Architectural Appreciation

An in-depth study of an iconic building to appreciate the different dimension to the design. Analysing the form, space, light to the neighbouring environment.

As part of the Understand Architecture module, we had to select a building that was of interest to you. I selected the award winning Medieval Museum in Waterford to study.

The study analysed all the design aspects of the building from the approach to the circulation and scale.

The final book is contained in the file on the right.

Kildalton

Conservation Project

Canteen Extension

To design a low energy extension to the existing canteen with minimal impact on the existing protected building and local environment.

An initial survey of the existing building and canteen was required, along with the brief, which outlined the requirements of the management of Kildalton College.

This was a solo project requiring an individual approach and response to the brief using AutoCAD, SketchUp, Revit and Therm wiht a conservation angle. The booklet to the right shows the process and completion of the design criteria.

Retrofit Apt 412

Solo Project

Environmental Science

An analysis of apartment 412. Details shown using Therm, calculations of Y-Values and Psi Values of the apartment.

This project was completed as a solo project where the Y-values and Psi Values of the existing construction details and of the proposed upgrades were calculated. These were then entered into DEAP, resulting in a comparable BER Rating of the existing with proposed

The file on the right is the presentation which contains more detail information the above.

Glamping

Group Project

Glamping Unit Design

To design a compact portable glamping unit for Irish festivals, that will is economical to construct and with a fast uncomplicated assembly.

This project was completed as a group project where each member of the team contributed to the finish design and presentation.

The finished design was a lightweight easy to assemble and transport unit with washable surfaces. Most importantly with an attractive finish and luxurious festival lodgings for all.

The presentation is contained in the file to the right.
